Duties of a Pharmacy Technician

Pharmacy technicians play a significant role in health care, as they are the ones responsible for performing various pharmacy related tasks under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Such job requires you to do both administrative and clerical duties. As a pharmacy technician, you must have proper training and thorough knowledge in the field as your primary duty is to ensure the patient's optimum health, through the medication and health care products you provide.

Under a pharmacist's supervision, your job includes receiving and verifying drug prescriptions, preparing and mixing drugs according to the physician's prescriptions, and transferring medications from bottles or vials to other containers and labeling them accordingly and accurately. In addition, you are also responsible for the proper storage and maintenance of drugs.

Furthermore, you should be organized and be very careful since you will also be performing clerical tasks such as receiving, counting and storing stocks of medications, chemicals, and other supplies. In some instances, you may also work as a cashier who operates cash registers and accepts payments from the customers. Moreover, you can have additional duties such as answering phone inquiries, assisting customers' concerns, restocking shelves, labeling bottles and marking stock for sale, and organizing files, lists, and important patient data and storing it in the computer.

The duties of a pharmacy technician should not be taken lightly, as one single and tiny error can result in a devastating and negative effect on the patient. Pharmacy technicians are the lifeblood of pharmaceutical stores. Thus, you should be able to work under pressure since you will be dealing with a lot of patients every day.
